The RocketRAID 454 can support multiple RAID arrays, and the 4 independent
ATA133 channels provide parallel disk/array access.
Due to the RocketRAID 454's RAID 5, 10 and 0 capabilities, data storage and
retrieval is dramatically faster than single drive systems.
Data security features based on RAID 1 mirroring, hot-spare, and hot swap
capabilities
For RAID 1 and 10, the RocketRAID 454 provides disk mirroring, hot-spare
options for automatic array-rebuilds, hot-swap support for swapping failed disks
on the fly (works with Hot-Swap capable mobile racks such as Rocket Mate), and
disk failure notification (audible alarms, visual warning messages). These
features provide a high level of security and data protection against hard disk
failure.

This device is amazingly slow. If you stripe raid your hard drives, they seem to be slower than if you use one at a time. RAID 5 only reveals maximum read speeds of 3.5Mb/s using three or more 200Gb Seagate 7200RPM hard drives on any given channel. When you increase the size of the stripe to 2Mb, you can clearly see that the controller is only able to address one hard drive at a time by looking at the hard drive lights.

Highpoint has always made good controller cards. I've used quite a few of their low and high end cards and performance has always been top notch. With this card, it's no different. For $120, you can't beat the fact that this card has 4 IDE channels, meaning you can plug 8 IDE hard drives. Plus the fact that you have RAID 5 rounds out the package. The only down side with the package is you get ribbon cables, not rounded cables. If you have a small case, or for that matter, if you intend to plug 8 hard drives into this card, invest in 4 rounded IDE cables because 4 ribbon cables will really restrict airflow in the case.

Installation and set up were fairly easy. Set up 4 x 200GB in RAID 5, giving me 600GB of storage. After several months, one of the drives failed. I replaced the drive with a spare, rebooted and selected rebuild from the card's BIOS and after almost 36 hours, all data is there again.

The card comes in a quality package, with long ATA66 cables (not rounded though) and associated drivers and software on floppy disks (why not a CD? I can always build a driver disk if needed...)

Before I bought this RAID controller, I did a bit of homework and checked out the driver downloads and documentation on the HighPoint website. Looked like they had the Linux support ready enough to get everything going, and bootable at that.

As soon as I installed the raid card i set up my 4x Western Digital(1200JB) 120GB 8mb drives in raid 0. Setup was easy. As for speed, I installed windows xp in about 1/4 of the time as normal. This has been the greatest investment in my gameing computer to improve loading times and installation(great for servers and file storage).
