2. Connect FAN MATE 1 to the 3-pin CPU fan connector of the mainboard.
3. Turn on the computer after assembly is finished.
4. When the speed control knob is turned fully counter-clockwise, the fan speed is minimum, and the fan operates in silent mode. You can select the desired fan speed by turning the knob.
When booting a computer in which FAN MATE 1 is used with the CPU fan, an alarm sound may be generated by a system monitoring program to indicate that the rotation of the CPU fan is slow. If this happens, you may turn the speed control knob fully clockwise to increase the fan speed, set 'CPU Fan Detected' to 'Disabled' in the BIOS settings, or set the slowest rotation of the CPU fan in the system monitoring program to less than or equal to 1500 RPM. Some mainboards do not boot if the rotation of the CPU fan is below a certain number of RPM. If the BIOS settings are updated, Silent Mode can be used. Great simple product to customize fan speed. Installation is simple, and the cables are long enough that you can install the box outside your case if you need to access the controls.

This will make any heatsink quieter- you can adjust the speed easily with the little knob and you can set it to precisely the speed you want. Its hardwired which is wonderful, though I suppose if you want it to automatically speed up when the cpu temp is higher, this won't do that for you. The fan mate is perfect for the stock crappy loud hsf's that come with your cpu, it quiets those well. Its also perfect for high end pricey heatsinks to quiet your system easily. This is a beautiful little device that doesn't require messy alternatives such as rewiring a molex connector to give your fan 7v instead of 12v...

All things considered, this is a great product. The excess wire does have it's applications and benifits. For my application, I'm considering some "custom" installation ideas.

Newer heatsinks have the auto fan adjuster, but this baby is still great with use on regular fans or older heatsinks.

I used to use high-wattage potentiometers to slow fans, but that involved cutting the fan's wires. These cost more, but are a much slicker way to go. I'm using mine with an Arctic Cooling Arctic Fan 12L at 450 rpm. Fan noise is something no one should have to suffer from, so everyone should have one or more of these!

Seems much nicer than the older version of the fanmate. Heatsink seems more substantial too. Haven't tested it on a voltmeter but it seems fairly linear.
