Since my HTPC uses an RF remote, I wasn't able to control my IR tv and surround speakers with the HTPC remote. This device solved my problem. Using Girder, I learned IR remote codes, which I could then map to a key on my RF remote. As mentioned above, cheap external transmitters pick up EM interference which causes the USB-UIRT to stop responding until you unplug and plug it back in.

This is a must have product if you're building a HTPC. Transmit distance is good. I use it to control a Cogeco digital cable box so my HTPC will change channels and record shows while I'm at work. Setup may be somewhat difficult for a first time user, but there is excellent help on the internet. You can also use this to control the pc with a remote.
