Great (maybe even the best) air cooler for OC'd processors. The raw performance is the clear stand out, noise is louder then I like personally (and I have since switched to a AIO liquid cooler) but pretty good compared to other coolers out there.
It's still Noctua-Butt-Ugly, but if you don't care about that then I would highly recommend the NH-D14 to anyone going the air-cooling route.

Performs great (OC'd FX8320 to 4.2 , idles at 28-30C) No leaking risk compared to liquid cooling cpu coolers Noctua fans are replaceable
|
Requires a Full tower case It will most likely block your RAM slots
|
It was a bit time consuming setting up the D14 for the first time, but I was faster aligning it after having to change motherboards. This cooler is quite intimidating and is rather bulky but it's quite secure once properly set up.

Fits perfectly in my Cooler Master HAF 932 and blows directly into the rear chassis fan. Replaced an aging Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev2 that was on its last legs. My i7 930 is overclocked to 4GHz and stays at 40 Celsius or below on idle.
Check to make sure your case can handle it first.

Easy to install. Good cooling performance on overclocked i7 4770k. Near silent using the low noise adapters.
|
Not as quiet as I was expecting based on some reviews without the low noise adapters.
|
Overall a great unit and would recommend to anyone. Make sure to check ram compatibility on Noctua's web site as this unit is large and will most likely cover a ram slot.

Heavy Install sucks Performance not so great Louder than Intel HSF
|
Finally got around to installing the D14. Have to say, first impressions are not great. The installation was not quick. Yes, it was straightforward and the directions were clear, but there are obviously some "tolerances" involved in Noctua's factory. I've installed many, many coolers over the years, and this one was the most time consuming as the 2 spring-loaded screws do not line up well.
I'm not particularly satisfied with the performance, either. With the default fan speeds, this makes more noise than the Intel HSF, which I do not consider to be a quiet cooler. So much for Noctua's reputation for silence. If there was cooling performance to spare, I would consider trying the fan speed adapters, but when you're seeing numbers like 59c (p95 blend) on a stock 2500k with 70f ambient, you don't feel terribly confident about dropping airflow and returning to OC'd profiles.
I'm going to let the MX4 sit for a few days, even though that should not be necessary. If I don't see an improvement, I will remount the cooler, since I may have disturbed the MX4 too much during the installation process. I notice that cores 2 and 3 are 5c warmer than cores 1 and 4, so there may be contact issues.
I do not recommend installing this with your board in the case. I think I would have had a much easier time of the install with a clean board outside of the case, rather than having poor angles and RAM/video card in the way.

This thing is HUGE. I am coming from the Noctua NH-U12 (pretty large) and this thing makes it look like a midget. I'm glad i have a huge case for this fan...it fit fine but i can see it not fitting in other setups.
I personally love this thing. I'm running it on the LOW RPM mode and its VERY QUIET. Its cooling my intel 4670K and it idles at 35C and loads at 45C. Thats pretty good for that processor on air cooling.
Would buy again.

One of the best air cooling. As best as some water system
|
Really big and heavy
|
This HS is the best yuou can get. I have this in another computer for one year and it still rock. Keep my i7 950 z 4Ghz cooler than the i7 at stock clock with the stock cooling! I just bought asnother one for a i5 4670k z 4.5Ghz and it keep it cool without any problem. I would recommend it to anyone over the small water cooling kit. Just be sure it can fit in your case (watch out for case with side pannel fan) and be sure to get RAM stick that are compatible with it (Look on their website).

Cools very well, quiet, looks good imo, easy to install, includes hardware to install on both intel and amd, as well as a bunch of extra mounting screws/plugs for other fans you may have.
|
It's big, can cause issues for people with smaller/cheaper cases and certain types of ram, be sure to check Noctua's site for compatibility before ordering
|
So after doing some pretty heavy research into what cpu cooler I wanted, I finally settled on this guy. I've owned it for about 2 weeks now and all I can say is I'm very impressed. My cpu went from idle temps at about 30c and load temps at about 45-50c with the stock cooler to about 15-20c idle and 40c max with a heavy load. It runs quietly, looks good imo and was a lot easier than I expected to install. My only complaint is it's big, like a lot bigger than it looks on YouTube videos or pictures, so a lot of ram isn't compatible and it's a serious pan to get fans connected to the motherboard once it's installed, but the size is probably what helps it cool so well.
Overall, really happy with the purchase. Highly recommended, 10/10.

Keeps temps low. Easy installation
|
Not as low noise as expected.
|
I got this cooler on a haswell i7. After reading reviews on this, my expectations for its ability to be noiseless may have been too high. While it is not loud at all, I can still hear it very distinctly at over 5 meters away (I unplugged all other fans and hdd to test the sound). Installation for it was very straight forward and easy to understand with the included manual. Also, it comes with a lot of accessories should you need them. I might try the fans with the lower rpm cable that it comes with.

I didn't want to make the move to liquid cooling so went with the next best thing. This thing is a beast, but works. My pc sits at 20C at idle and after an hour of gaming 25C. Running my 4770K at 4.5GHz and I have no heat issues at all. I ran cinebench to test stability and under 100% load it did reach 50C, but within seconds after completion temps had dropped back down to 25. It is big so make sure your system is compatible (case size and ram choice). Fans can be moved up on the radiator to give you some more room to fit ram, I had to move my 120mm fan up to fit over Corsair Vengeance Pro ram. Radiator just fit over them so do your research before you buy.

Had to Remove motherboard due to case reasons...

With the HAF-EATX the mobo cut out is crap with all aftermarket coolers so had to remove everything to install it
But man thing is super silent even with the fans maxed out . Currently Running z 4.6 GHz z 1.56 Volts on my 4770k temps stay very nice. Had to check to see if the fans were spinning this thing is so quite . Moved over from an H100 that by this things standards sounded like a wind Tunnel Highly Recommend this thing !

Good cooling Not loud for great cooling and size Not too difficult to install
|
Color doesn't match well with anything in my case Hard to plug fans in motherboard after installing
|
Great for overclocking Haswell. The fans are quiet when I turn them down. At full speed I do notice them so I had to set them to lower rpm when not running intensive programs.
After mounting the heatsink, plugging anything at the top and left side of the motherboard becomes very difficult. It would be smart to plug everything in before installation. Installation can be said to be not difficult, but it's actually complicated enough that you don't want to take it back out to plug the cords in. If you plan on installing top and back fans, do so before installing this.

- Fantastic Cooling under heavy load - Mounting Hardware is top notch - Looks great - It's HUGE!
|
- RAM must be low profile - Will not fit in some cases
|
I purchased this thing when I decided to do a case upgrade for my system (i5-760, i55 Sabretooth Mobo, dual XFX ATI Radeon 5850s). In order to make it work, I bought a case that would fit this monstrosity (Corsair Air 540 from a Antec DF-30) as well as purchasing new RAM that would fit (AMD Performance Edition 2133MHz). The results have been great, I replaced the one 120mm that came with the cooler with a second Noctua 140mm that matches the other. It looks awesome, fits with the RAM, and most importantly cools GREAT. With my Core i5 760 overclocked to 4.2GHz, RAM to 2100MHz, under Intel Burn Test at max, I did not see the temps go over 65C under long durations of stress. At idle, temperatures are the closest to room temperature I have ever seen from any air cooler. Very impressed with both the function and design of this product and would recommend to anyone wanting to go all out on their next build. NOCTUA FTW

Excellent CPU cooling Quiet Operation Flexible
|
Non-PWM fans
|
This is no doubt the best CPU cooler I've ever used. It keeps my i5 4670K at around 50-55 degrees Celcius when running Prime95, and around 23-24 degrees Celcius when idle. It runs very quietly at top speed too.
The cooler is very well designed. Although it's very huge, it should fit most mid-size cases and most RAMs. The two fans are attached by a couple clips which are easily adjustable. By adjusting the height of the 120mm fan, I easily accomodate the Corsair Vengeance Pro, which is by no means low profile. The clip design also allows easy changing of any of the two fans.
One drawback of the cooler is that the two fans are not 4-pin PWM fans. I use an Asus motherboard and Asus' Fan Xpert 2 couldn't adjust the speed of 3-pin CPU fans. So, the fans are running at top speed all the time. The only way to lower the speed is to attach the provided cable, but there's no real-time or multi-level adjustment. Given its premium price, it's really a big disappointment. I would give this cooler a 4.5 if I could because of this.

Gold standard of air cooling
|
Large... it has its own orbit
|
This is the GOLD STANDARD of air cooling, and has been for a few years. In fact, unless you have a THICK, DOUBLE-RAD water cooling solution, this air cooler will likely be superior when it comes to high load - watch Linus' videos if you don't believe me. With that said, a sufficiently large case will be required for clearance. Sufficient airflow will also help maximize this cooler's potential.

Installation went well, this being the first time I've removed regular MB fixtures and installed spacers. I'm really pleased with build quality. I'm really pleased with accessories package. I'm really pleased with cooling and low noise.

None so far.
|
I was happy with PM on this, and so got it for present use - thinking ahead to a liquid system. From what I'm seeing, I'll probably keep it for a long time! I'm using it with an 8350. Even with Crucial Ballistix RAM, there isn't a huge amount of clearance so I'm really glad that I went with this "high clearance" cooler. I'm grateful for all the information brought up in previous reviews, which convinced me to try it!

Works perfectly, quite
|
Does not include fans with pwm It's HUGE, had a hard time making all the fan connections because lack of space due to the size of the heatsink
|
Works perfectly, keeps my CPU at pretty much room temperature when idle. The only thing preventing me from putting 5 stars is the lack of fans with pwm not included. For a premium heatsink, I would have expected it to come with pwm to control fan speed via motherboard so it pretty much runs maximum speed at all times. The fans are interchangeable though. The noise is still relatively low.

If you're thinking about getting anything less than a Kraken X60, then just get this. This thing performs almost exactly the same as a H100, only it's 5-10 decibels quieter. The only problem with it is that you have to make sure your case and ram are compatible in terms of spacing, but other than that it's the king of the castle. The only step up from this is either a Kraken X60, an Swiftech H220, or a full blown water cooling setup.
If you're not getting either of those 3, just get this.

Already had one which I gave away for my gf's comp. This is my second D14 I purchase and I am very happy with it. Packaging and quality is just impressive. It does fit into Corsair 200R which I got it for its compact size but you will have bit hard time taking the fans off when you uninstall. (I am getting CM HAF XB cause I am not impressed with 200R) Performance is almost on par with mid end water coolers and I am still going old school with this monster air cooler.

My i5-750 at stock clocks idles in the mid 20s and hits 49 under full load. The heatsink was much quieter compared to the stock fan on load. The only downside to this heatsink is its sheer size. It sits over all 4 of my RAM slots so RAM with tall fins will not fit. It also blocked my first PCI-e slot so make sure your mobo has enough room/additional PCI-e slots (i am using an old gigabyte p55m-ud2 in a NZXT gamma case).

It's a behemoth! Can interfere with RAM slots and possibly side mounted case fans if you have them.
|
This thing is huge! I was quite surprised when I first saw this thing in person. That being said, being that it's so huge, it will tend to interfere with taller standing RAM (like a lot of Corsair RAM) so that may be one of the things you would want to look into if you're considering this cooler. Also be aware that it MAY also interfere with side mounted case fans if you have any of those installed.
It does extremely well... One of these allowed me to get a 2700K up to 5GHz stable.
Overall, I'm extremely impressed by this cooler. I've used it in multiple builds so far and it has not let me down at all.

Keeps processor amazingly cool! best air cooler on the market right now by far! totally satisfied!
|
stock fans are ugly and will crush anybody with aesthetics as a priority. it will hover overtop of the 2 ram slots closest to the processor and if you don't have low profile ram, the noctua NH D 14 will not fit, unless you move your ram Dims over to the far Right slots but this can affect ram performance with some motherboards. make sure to check if you are unsure if your ram dims will be an issue with a compatibility chart before buying. ONE ISSUE I SHOULD DEFIANTLY DRAW ATTENTION TO! if you are planning on changing the stock fans to ones that are much less of an eyesore, the fan mounting system only supports 120mm fans. Even though the middle fan is 140mm, the actual mounting points on the stock fan are in 120mm fan positions!!!!
|
best air heatsink currently available amazing CPU cooling performance I highly recommend for overclocking ugly fan color overlaps the left 2 ram slots gimmicky fan mounting system

I have used the H100 for problaby 6 months and the thing didn't increase my overclock and was like having a jet engine sitting beside me. Now I hear that some of them had some kind of fan defect but that's no excuse.
Ended up getting the NH-D14 as I heard it was the quietest air solution and they were not lying. It is a total dream, not only is it quiet but I was able to get my overclock up to 4.8 stable....100mhz more than I ever had before.
I had to run the H100 at 4.5 too keep my comp stable.
Needless to say I dont know why I stayed so long with the H100 but I'm stubborn.

- Extremely quiet. - Excellent performance. - Well done instructions. - Fantastic mounting system. - Really good craftsmanship.
|
- Very very large. - Why a 12cm fan? - A bit expensive.
|
I put this on an Intel Core i7 3770K currently running at 4.5 GHz with 1.24 volts and I'm reading 75 degrees celsius on the hottest core after running Prime95 for thirty minutes (room temperature near my case is 18.1 degrees celsius according to my digital thermometer). Truly amazing performance for an air cooler to say the least.
I really love the design and how easy it is to install. I wish all manufacturers would put this much thought into their designs. It's pretty big and heavy though so you might not want to put it in a machine that will be moved around a lot, though Linus said in a video these are pretty reliable when shipped attached to a motherboard so take your pick. Anything else there is to say has been said already in the numerous other reviews here.

This thing is huge! It fits in my thermaltake MK-I no problem. I installed this on an AMD FX-6200 and that is on an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.This heatsink/fan will cover all 4 ram slots on this board but you can adjust the fan height so its not really a problem.I knew this going in and purchased GSkill Sniper low profile ram wich will fit under the fan with no fan adjustment needed. In closing i will say that I overclocked this cpu to 4.2Ghz and ran Prime95 torture test on all six cores for 8 hrs, no core went above 38 degrees celcius with this heatsink cooling it. If your case can fit it, and it's in your budget, YOU WANT THIS!

So much quieter than my H100, that thing was busing 24/7 it was too annoying to keep. The DH14 runs much quieter with the same cooling effects with an OCed CPU. Plus you dont get the mess or potential damage to your parts like you would with a liquid CPU cooler.

-Clips touch my video card, but the website told me it may. -It sure is hard to remove my video card now, but I still can.
|
I have been waiting for this to come on sale and it did :)
The only issue I had was that the fan clip did touch my video card. Noctua told me to go ahead and give it a little bend(removed from fan first). That did the trick.
http://imageshack.us/a/img209/4777/clipfv.jpg
Noctua is VERY fast to answer questions and even sent me another set of clips for my other NF-P12.
The temperatures are better, but not extremely lower when coming from other good coolers. The biggest thing is that this cooler can get by with very little air flow so the fans can run slower and still keep good temperatures.
I do not think my CPU puts out enough heat to max this cooler out either. I also like the idea of a heatsink that is big enough that even a fan failure will not result in a very fast heat build up(It could idle 24/7 fanless with ease, full load is not a good idea for fanless).

Quite big Not the cheapest thing around
|
I got this cooler on sale for 50$, for what i paid, I doubt i could get better. It comes with good thermal compound as well. One thing to watch out for is the size of the thing, it's quite big but if it fits, It'll do you great!

This is doing the job very well for my cpu overclocked to 4.4. ghz. Installation is a hard process since that thing is huge. Check your ram height, because ram with hight profile may conflict with this cooler.

great cooler when you get it on sale! one of the best coolers on the market today with almost silent opperation.
|
Weight.... Size...
|
This thing is a MONSTER! I have been fooling around with the my fan controler and even with it on max, seems to be pretty silent. I dont mind the fact that its huge, but man is this thing BIG! I thought my old TRUE 120....this is almost full on double the size without the fans!!! Great that is comes with "reliable" true Noctua fans, and not some cheap garbage ones. Love the cooler! I have never used Noctua products, but this is a great piece of hardware, especially when you get it on sale!!!

Quiet Does the job Clear instructions with images Packaging was intact
|
Takes up space Does not work with high profile RAM Edges are sharp and can cut you Takes a long time to assemble if you're new
|
This is my very first aftermarket heat sink in my life. It was a good thing I waited for this come on sale at $49.99 vs the regular price.
Just a side note, despite the website saying it is suitable for LGA 1155 motherboards but the box does not say about it being compatible for LGA1155, it still works nevertheless. The bracket for the 1156 motherboard is the same. I have had this verified by a friend of mine PLUS on Noctua's website.
At first, it took a while to understand the instructions and assemble the entire thing. Took me around 30 to 45 mins or so.
Few things to note:
1) It won't fit if you have a small case. Mine fits perfectly with my Antec 1100 case and with a GTX 560Ti in place
2) It won't fit properly if you have high profile RAM. So if you have low profile RAM that's a good thing but you can check the compatibility before hand.
3) Be sure to have the wiring done before hand vs hooking up the CPU power cables, to the motherboard. It definitely is hard to work underneath the heat sink once its been fitted into the case/motherboard.
4) The edges are REALLY sharp. I cut my thumb when trying to fiddle with the cables on the side. So be cautious about that.
Overall its very quiet and works like a charm. Initially when the CPU is being used, my temp was reading at 35 Deg C, but now with the cooler its down to 29 Deg C. This is with the 140MM fan 1200RPM and the 120MM fan at 897RPM. Of course if I were to increase those and use the U.L.N.A cables, it will be quiet and reduce the temp even more.
Definitely recommend this!

Installing this bad boy was much easier than other CPU coolers, and it is very sturdy once installed. It is very quiet and dropped by CPU temps by about 12 degrees (and this is going from a Coolermaster V6 GT which had alread dropped my temps). Great product with every penny.

Real Huge. Those who buy this cooler must make sure they have enough room in their case. Install memory prior to installation of Noctua. Have few cms of clearance space above memory sticks.

* Very effective air cooling * Quiet, especially with fans slowed down (silent to me at under 800rpm, still quiet at 1200rpm full speed) * Very high quality fit and finish * Packaging and manual are also very nice * Super easy installation, even though it's huge * Better value (cooling power per dollar) than the closed water products, especially when on sale
|
* Massive footprint makes it hard to access surrounding components on motherboard once installed (have to remove it to access first two DIMMs, fan headers etc.) * Heavy (has a strong backplate though)
|
Been running my NH-D14 for 2.5 months now on an i7-3770K overclocked to 4.5GHz. I have the fans connected to a motherboard header, they are silent at low rpm when idle (400-500rpm) and then ramp up to 1200rpm as CPU temp rises. At 1200rpm you can hear them, but they are still quiet. CPU core temps max out around 65C in Battlefield 3 and 75C in LinX/IBT 100% load.
If you have the space in your case, I would recommend this over the Corsair H60/80/100, it's a better value and no chance of loud pump noise and no need for strong fans to blow through the rad, plus you can keep the top of your case closed = quieter computing.

Cools my CPU easily. It was bigger than I had expected. For the next cooler I will probably go with one of the Corsair water cooled ones.

- What can I say, awesome cooling and near dead silence. I can't get my CPU up to 50 degrees and I still don't hear the fans! - They give you 3-4 times more heatsink compound than you need so you can save it for other installs. - It's packaged to survive. The postman would have to run it over with his truch to damage this thing!
|
Brown fans? I wish they were black or grey. Brown doesn't go with anything..
|
If possible, plug everything near the CPU into your motherboard before installing this because it's probably going to make it hard to plug in your 4/8 pin power connector and any fan headers that are nearby.

Cools well, my i7 3770k is at 30 at idle.
|
-Cooling block is HUGE -Fan noise is noticeable unless the included ultra low noise adapter is used
|
This is a good cooler overall. My i7 3770k is around 30C at idle/low load. I have not yet stressed the machine enough to see temperature past 45C on daily uses.
Nitpicks #1: cooling block is so big that there is very little clearance after installation on ASUS sabertooth Z77 in my NZXT Phantom full tower case (the block almost touches the side panel and about two fingers worth of space between it and the top case fan) Nitpicks #2: the fan noise is noticeable (but not disruptively loud) without using the included ultra low noise adapter. With the adapter the fans are noticeable when starting up, and almost silent after 20 seconds or so.

This cooler does the best job of all the air coolers I have ever used while managing to remain incredibly quiet.
|
This thing is large. Very large. Beware if you have RAM with heatsinks that extend more than a couple mm above their boards, as they may not fit underneath this cooler's heatsink. Expect it to occlude four of the eight memory slots on a typical LGA 2011 board.
|
In the event you need a LGA 2011 mounting bracket Noctua are happy to ship one to you. Just look for its part number, NM-I2011, on their website and fill out the form the page links to.

This is an awesome CPU Cooler...I believe the thermal paste that comes with it actually helps in the difference of temps...I've used many coolers with other thermal pastes and have never came up with temps this low based on Delta temps...I am impressed...

This cooler works great with my stock i5 2500k. Fits nicely into the Antec P280 and is great for a low noise build. I took one of the fans off to use as an intake on my case and the cooling is still superb, 30C idle and 56C max load. Wish Noctua offered different colored fans but it really doesn't matter with great performance like this.

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT cooler if you're looking for an air solution. Keeps my AMD 1100T OC'd to 4GHz cool at an idle 22 degrees Celsius, and at max 54 degrees Celsius. I would definitely recommend to someone who is interested in overclocking their CPU, but if you're a noise-fanatic, you may want to think about going water cooling. Though the D-14 includes different voltage attachments that can be put onto the fans to reduce the RPM, their can be a lack of performance if this is done.

Huge (But is that really a bad thing?)
|
You can actually place a third fan on this heatsink! But I don't think it will increase its performance though.. Anyway, this heatsink keeps my i5-2500k (no overclock) at around 30C Idle, and 50C Load. Not too bad I guess. It might be a little pricey, so I probably won't buy one for my next build. (I have my eyes on this Hyper 212.. I heard it was the best bang for the buck heatsink)

-big (expected) and heavy (didn't expect it to be as much so)...not a con per se please read comments

so, yes it is big and heavy, and will more than likely disrupt a RAM slot or two if you're not using low profile ram. thankfully i've spent the last six months or so on and off researching each component for my new build and was aware of all these factors and was able to accommodate for all of them, but not everyone is borderline OCD like i am, so here's a helpful tip/warning for others.
it is a fantastic cooler (it better be for the price) and i would recommend it if you want to do serious overclocking and have the cash to spare (and don't mind using low profile memory)

On my computer using the ASUS P8P67 REV3.1 using Corsair CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 Vengeance ram the heat sink touches the ram heat sinks on the first pair of memory slots. It does not seem to be an issue but If I ever have to replace those Dimm's I'll have to remove the Cpu heat sink first.

Compared to the copper Zalman I had on my Q6600, my temps are much lower, fan noise on high is much lower, my stable OC is higher, and I generally feel that my OC is now limited by my chip and not my cooling. Fans on low are very quiet.
|
It's huge. I have a narrow mid-sized case and it does not fit with the side panel on unless I mount the fans so no part of them stick above the top of the heatsink, which is not optimal for cooling. However, it's not a problem for me because I always run with an open case.
|
Is probably way overkill for my system, but I doubt I'll ever have to worry about the CPU overheating which is great. Read great reviews regarding this product which is why I purchased it, so I can't wait to get it installed. One of the plastic fan blades broke off the heat sink supplied with the Intel chip just running at moderate RPM for no apparent reason, so I'm anxious to get my replacement mounting bracket to get this mongo heat sink installed when the new mounting bracket arrives.

This is the second NH-D14 I've used in a system. If you're looking for the best and most silent air cooler, this is it. Noctua is amazing. I called them and asked for another fan clip so I could mount a third fan, and sent me one free of charge. The only thing that can get you lower temperatures would be proper water cooling (not that Corsair crap).

-lowered temperatures -quiet design -massive airflow
|
-it's HUGE
|
As many people have stated before, this thing is GIGANTIC. I couldn't believe it when I received my new system. However, Noctua has done an impeccable job in its design. The second 120mm fan allows for adequate clearance over your RAM slots. Keep in mind some of the larger heatsink RAM ie:corsair Vengeance, will not fit. There's a huge list of compatible RAM on Noctua's site, so just make sure you give it a quick scan to make sure yours will fit. I personally use G.Skill Sniper, and there's plenty of room to spare (Ripjaws will also fit). I can't attest to the ease of installation, being lazy I let NCIX throw my system together. However, numerous friends have confirmed they had no difficulties installing theirs. I have it seated on an i7 2600k running OC at 4.0Ghz. It never clears 40C under load. I've pushed it up higher to 4.6 before the fans even ramped up a little bit and it still didn't clear 44C on load. If you don't have a fan controller, I recommend getting one. I have a new one on order right now. With the sheer power of this thing you will never have to run it any higher than "low" settings, unless you're doing some serious overclocking. Amazing heatsink, your CPU will love you.

Uber cooling (obviously) Uber Build quality It looks sick Accessories and packaging
|
Uber huge (not really a con but its all i can think of)
|
Large yes but that's the price you pay for an air cooler of this caliber,it just sucks when you hafta take your whole cooler off just to get to the cpu's EPS connecter or in my case to install 2 fans in the ceiling of my chassis...before I got this I was a little disappointed the fans had to be brown/beige but once this bad boy was installed I loved it so much I went and replaced my stock corsair black fans with 2 of noctuas NF-P14 FLX and 1 NF-P12 and now i absolutely love their colors and of course their blissful silence. Also worth mentioning is if you have a fan controller there is never any need to turn the D14 past low speed, only time I have gone any higher is when I stability tested my 2500Ks 4.7Ghz clock using prime and IBT other then that low speed is all youl ever need so feel free to use the noise adapters if you don't have a controller A small tip b4 removing from the box,put on some latex gloves to keep your greasy fingers from tarnishing the smooth aluminum and shiny nickel...And did I mention this thing is Uber.

-Keeps my CPU cool -Silent -Great packaging -Looks BEAST! (I like the fan colors despite what people say) -Nothing feels cheap in the packaging(hefty backplate, metal case badge, etc) even comes with a screwdriver. -Easy install -Good thermal paste, and enough to use 3 times and more. -Price(it's almost as good as a 160$+ watercooling kit...) -Great fans.
|
-Quite heavy, but that doesn't matter to me, the mounting system holds it fine.
|
Best heatsink I have ever owned.

- Looks (?) - Size
|
Easiest heatsink I have ever installed. Packaging was great, instructions were great, accessories are very generous including an entire TUBE of thermal paste. Dropped my temps by 15-18C.
Thought it was ugly when I first saw it but it's starting to grow on me. Don't think it's that bad now. Size is a con, but it's to be expected in order for it to perform.

Super silent
|
The fan color could have been changed, no mention of fan direction
|
Super simple to install. The instructions were easy to read and I got it mounted in no time. The one thing that gave me trouble was working out the orientation of the cooler. I didn't know which way the air flow would go and I had to resort to installation videos to guide me.
Other then that... The thing is a beast. It's completely silent and cools like a champ.

High Performance Quiet
|
Color scheme leaves more to be desired Size - may not fit in smaller cases
|
It performs very well. I have a i7 2600K lightly overclocked to 4.4 ghz and this cooler knocked the temperatures down at least 25 degrees at full load compared to the stock fan that came with the processor. The front fan can be re-adjusted to make room for taller ram. Do check the compatibility of your ram and case before buying this cooler as it is very large. In addition, the color of the fans are beige and brown which detracts from their appearance.

-great air cooling solution -visually appealing -fairly quiet

|
I did some reasearch into water cooling and the amount of maintanence required on a custom loop and risks and costs involved made me reconsider. I decided to go for the top of the food chain for air cooling. From what I've read, there are only a few heatsinks that outperform this one and the difference is minor. It allowed me to easily overclock my i5 2500K to 4.5Ghz which runs at 28-29C idle and it's fairly quiet. I also like the chrome look of the heatsink although the color of the fans is a bit unattractive. Do your homework and make sure that this thing will fit with all of your components as it is very large.

- Looks amazing IMO - Great performance - Really low noise output - Noctua quality (from packaging, to construction - top notch)
|
- Expensive - Huge (removing/adding RAM requires it be uninstalled)
|
This thing is amazing. Been a loyal Noctua user for quite a while now and they have yet to disappoint me, especially when they consistently put out amazingly well designed and well made products. A quality manufacturer - no doubt. This thing cools, and it does so quietly. IMO, it looks amazing in my case and I don't mind the fan colours. Few cons that come with a heatsink this size are - yeah you guessed it - size: it's a PITA having to completely uninstall it every time you want to remove or install a RAM module, as it covers the RAM completely. If you have a smaller case, this may not fit - then again if you have a small case, you shouldn't be able to afford this cooler. Overall, it's a fantastic product that I very highly recommend!

Excellent cooling ability, easy to install.
|
Its big...very...very big. Thus, RAM with a smaller heatsink such as stilletto would be desired over ram with a tall heatsink. Price
|
Totally awesome cooler, only downside... If you look at it like its a bad thing is the size. I personally like the fact that its huge. It looks pretty sweet too, noctua fan color scheme is kind of funny looking but at least its not pink!! Price is something to consider, but look at it this way, you get what you pay for. I've got this badboy installed on a ASUS M4A89GTD Motherboard with some Mushkin Stilleto ram and I still have about 5mm (maybe a bit more) of clearence between the heatsink and fan. Definitely better to go with lower profile ram if possible. I've got this installed inside a HAF 932 case and it keeps the Phenom 2 and Mobo idling under 28C most of the time and about 35ish when gaming.

Really Really big
|
Switched from Thermaltake V1 to Noctua NH-D14. It's really big, and I still couldn't use the top 200mm exhaust fan on my Thermaltake V5 case. I also had small ram, so it fit.
The temperature drop was about 10-15 degrees Celsius. Quite impressive. It's also a little quieter, but I can hardly tell as my PSU and GPU both roar at 40dba. Highly recommended if you have the dough.

QUIET! QUIET! QUIET! Great for any planned O/C'ing.
|
Expensive, humongous, and depending on your case & motherboard it's a pain to install.
|
I was sick and tired of my computer running like a jet engine whenever I tried to play a game. So I bought this for my AMD Phenom II X6, Antec Three hundred Case, and Asus M4AT88-M/USB3 motherboard. Excellent performance and barely audible fans. The CPU is running about 35*C on idle in July and 48*C MAX when gaming. Can't beat the performance!
Installation: Believe it or not, this fit into my Antec Three Hundred Case...barely. I had to play around a bit to get the 140mm fan secure but it fit. There really is only one way to install it inside the Antec 300 with my motherboard. And that's to have the fans blowing the air through the heat sink and right onto the rear exhaust fan.
Once installed there was about 3 cm of space between the 120mm fan I had on the heatsink and the 120mm case fan. I thought this was a bit redundant so I relocated the case fan to intake air for the video card. So far it's working great.
Overall, expensive purchase but can't be beat in terms of acoustic and thermal performance. A+

|
I got this to replace my cooler master 212. I wanted to upgrade because my 212's fan was not positioned right because my ram's heat sink was too tall. However the nh-d14 fixed that. Overall temperature has dropped around 3-5 degrees.

Amazing cooling potential easy to install
|
may not fit all motherboards and cases because of it's size
|
This is one GIANT heatsink. And I mean GIANT - biggest I have ever seen. It might not fit in a lot of cases out there. I've got the NZXT Phantom and it fits nicely, HOWEVER, I am unable to use a side fan in the case. There's simply not enough room.
There might also be a problem mounting it to your motherboard, as it covers a large section around the CPU. In my case the 1 RAM slot closest to the CPU are totally covered by the heatsink, meaning you can't take the stick out or put it in without first removing the heatsink - ANNOYING if you're having a ram problem. the other 3 slots on my board are clear, UNTIL you attach the outside 120mm fan to the heatsink. Then they are fully covered by this thing.
Luckily the heatsink is extremely simple to setup. Once the bracket is screwed in place, it's just a matter of adjusting 2 screws to get the tower heatsink part on and off. So if you do need to change the ram in that first slot, there's no MAJOR issue. you'll just need to make sure you have lots of thermal compound around in case you need to do it a few times. And as for the other 3 slots being covered by the fan...these fans are EXTREMELY easy to get on and off.
Noise: at default these fans are actually pretty loud compared to the silenx fans I'm used to in the past. But if you use the included low noise adapter, it's fine.
performance: this thing took my i5 2500K up to 5Ghz TOTALLY stable. OUTSTANDING!!
And as a special bonus the heatsink comes with a tube of noctua's excellent thermal paste. This stuff performs on par if not better than arctic silver. It's the best of the best.
Noctua also includes mounts if you decide to only use a single fan configuration you can still use the other fan as a case fan. Bonus!

This cooler is phenomenal! I am using with an AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE. With the stock cooler, I was running at 45c idle and 55-58c at load, OC'd at 3.8 GHz. Now, I'm OC'd to 4.0 GHz, with idle temps at 35-38c and load temps less than 50c!
|
This is not really a con, just a warning. The heat sink is large, very large. Make sure you get measurements prior to purchasing to ensure that you will have a nice fit.
|
Because of the way this unit installs, you may have issues with the second 120mm fan fitting over your memory heat sinks. I would recommend utilizing the motherboard/RAM compatibility list on Noctua's website to make sure that this unit is compatible with your set up.

So big... had to cut (Dremel) a few blades on it to fit my RAM modules heatsinks under.
|
WILLFI: You don't need the 4 pins connector to control RPM. Simply select "VOLTAGE" mode instead of "PWM" in BIOS.
This will use the power pin to control the fan instead of the PWM input pin on the 4 pins connector. I have 5 Noctua fans on my system, 4 of which are speed controlled. And none are 4 pins!

i bought this with a combo deal for the i7 950. I've seen it come up once in a while, and since the i7 950 sells for aout 280 in Canada, the fan was practically free. You can profit if you just bought the deal and sold both the CPU and fan at retail value.
As for performance, it runs really well and keeps my i7 950 at 4.0GHZ with hyperthreading and turbo boost 45 - 50 on idle and 65 at maximum load. I could go higher, but I'm not that experienced as an overclocker and not really looking to run this CPU at 4.5 or over (safety reasons).

Bought this cooler to replace a 212 Plus on my 2600K setup. Very Capable cooler. Surprised that it didn't include PWM Fans - so I couldn't use Asus Q-Fan to control speed based on temp. Without this it didn't offer me much improvement as I like it Quiet when surfing - using the ULNA made it quiet but limited the cooling under load. Ended up replacing with another cooler!

If you want the best, you have to pay for it !
Got this huge thing and put it in my HAF X case, no problem with fitting on Gigabyte P67A-DS4, even with G.Skill Ripjaws X ram (you can use all dimms).
Just begun to overclock my 2600K, first easy obverclock at 4Ghz gave my a Prime load temperature of about 52 celcius which is very good at stock cpu voltage.
Bought a Kazemaster to keep control of the fans and temperature in the case with probes included.
Very good product from Noctua again, the kit includes everything for all configurations.
If you want performance only, got for a cheaper product, this one is one of the best performance to noise ratio performer, THAT'S IT !

Does a great job at keeping the CPU cool, large fans make for quiet operation. Included thermal paste is also among the best available to use in the market, with no settling time required. Setup was easy and fast. Includes both fans!
|
You have to be more careful if you are moving your PC around.
|
Great HSF, I am running an i7 920 b 3.8 Ghz, 1.15625 volts, and prime95 maximum stress causes a maximum temperature of only 61 degrees celcius!
I have no complaints about this HSF really, I am very satisfied with everything about it. The installation was quick and easy from following instructions provided, included paste is tested at hardwarecanucks to be some of the best on the market, and it does its job well and quietly.

appearance, huge heat sink great silent fans
|
weight, oversized price
|
This is a great heat sink. I replaced my h50 with custon shroud push and pull set up and this keeps cpu a lot cooler under idle, about 5 degrees cooler compared to h50 with shrouds and push pull set up.
onl complaint i have is the size, but i guess you can't really complain for a great product like this.
I use AZZA Helios case and it fits but you'll have to make modification. only modification you need to make this fit in helios case is moving the side pnale fan on the outside,
over all great product.

I have install this heatsink on my new I7 880. Not OC for the moment, but i can keep the cpu below 28c. That's very great. Also, like all Noctua product, the installation is very easy. Fan are still ugly. Don't forget to PM
After few weeks, i do a OC on my CPU (4.1ghz) and temp never go up more than 60c. This heatsink is a heatkiller.
I will buy again.. NOCTUA IS GREAT !!!

Extremely quiet Excellent performance Great customer service
|
Very large
|
At the max settings the colling is exceptional. Overclocked Core i7 950 stays around 50-60 at 100% stress to all cores. Extremely quiet as well.
My only problem was the 140mm fan makes a clicking noise, possibly a faulty bearing. It's hard to notice over the case fans, but when the case is open it's noticeable. Noctua was a pleasure to deal with about this problem though: After showing a proof of purchase, they shipped a new fan to me. I did not even have to return the noisy fan first. Despite the problem, they get 5/5 because f the great support and service to their customers.

Biggest badest best CPU cooler on the market as of oct 2010 Overclock my i7 950 to 4.2ghz daily 24/7 temps get up to 77 max on that oc that's very good for a air cooler going from 3ghz to 4.2ghz. I had to take out my side case fan to properly close my case up this thing is huge it'll probaly cover up 1 ram slot and just come close to the second ram slot

In my mind this may be the best air cooler out there. It keeps my I7 930/4.2 ghz at 73-70-68-69 under load and does it quietly. I had a Megahalem on my I7 920/4.0 ghz and had to use a high cfm fan to keep it at the same temps and it was much noisier. Had I tried the Noctua first I may not have gone to watercooling on the 920.

Very large, may not fit in some cases. I also don't like now the fins on the heatsink touch my video card.

I just love how this thing has dropped my CPU temps. I have my i5 clocked at 3.4 on all 4 cores, and at 100% load, my temps never pass 53C. Compared to 82C on the stock cooler without any overclock, this is definitely a good purchase!

This is probably the best air cooler on the market. It is so big that there is a 99% is will hang over your ram. On my motherboard it hangs over the first 2 ram slots, and I had to remove the heatsink fins on my corsair dominators, but any normal sized ram should fit fine.

Lowered idle temps by 10o at idle. Ran Prime95 for 5 minutes (I know, not long enough but it is a new install on fresh grease) and temps went no higher than mid 60's. On the stock cooler, temps went to 100o in less than a minute on Prime95. Have not o/c at this point.
|
Large size for some cases.
Connecting the cpu fan plug to the board (after the noctua is screwed down) is a bit of a chore as I've got man-size hands.
|
The size of this is intimidating compared to the stock Intel unit: maybe 10x as big.
I'm using the NZXT Tempest Evo case so installation is a snap. Don't have to remove the mobo to install the Noctua brackets on the backside of the mobo as there is a "back door" to the case that also unscrews (just like the front) which provides access to the back of the mobo. Wonderful case in all respects.
Installation took about 1/2 hour (hot day so I had to make sure no sweat dripped off onto the mobo) otherwise it would have been even quicker. Most of my time was spent in cleaning the grease off the cpu from the stock install.
After the new hs was in place, idle temps for I7 930 are 37/25/41/35. I thought that was a bit high but they are 10o less than idle temps for my stock cooler.
I will be re-seating this sometime down the road to try for lower temps.
Overall, this is a great unit: does the cooling it's been reputed to do and is a breeze to install.
Just make sure your case (and memory) will accomodate the size.

As good as air cooling gets. Very quiet. SUperb workmanship, instructions, packaging... Noctua is a class act and it shows.
|
Big sucker!
|
I replaced a Coolermaster 212+ with this because my i7 930 OC'd w 4GHz with 1.25 vCore was running at >80C in stress testing... The Noctua brought this down to no more than 62 before the paste even had a chance to cure... amazing difference!
The included paste is excellent, btw. No need to get anything else.
Mounting on an Asus P6X58D-E was very easy and it feels very stable and secure. All ram slots are useable even with extra high sticks although you might need to adjust the fan a bit with really high stuff.
The clearance to the top of the case (Antec 300) is tight though. I recommend you plug-in the Y-cable for the 2 fans into the CPU fan header and attach both fans to it _before_ you mount it so you won't have to do it twice like I did :)
If you want better than this, it won't be air.

I've been a huge fan of Noctua and their case fans for some time, so I was eager to try out their flagship CPU cooler.
This was so simple to install, and would be just as simple to remove. The build quality of the product is excellent and is packaged very well in some of the nicest packaging I've ever seen. There is no possible way for the cooler to be damaged during shipment because of Noctua's clever packaging.
Installation only took a couple minutes and the cooler does a great job. It dropped my i7 920 by 12 degrees at both idle and load. It is also super quiet with the fans at full speed. If you can afford the $90 price tag, you won't be disappointed, if you can't afford it, I suggest saving up, because it will be hard to top the performance of this cooler! Just be sure to measure your case, i's a massive cooler. For anyone with a Fractal Design Define R2 case, it fits just perfectly!

Great cooler Silent Easy to apply Both AMD and Intel compatible
|
Price(but worth it for a good system)
|
This thing is as good as it get for quiet highly effective CPU coolers. The system went on hard to mount my case and mobo combo made it so I had to unscrew the mobo to mount it. Not the fault of the cooler. Setup was easy for the intel mount (1366). AMD looks just as simple. Had to reverse the flow and placement of the fans so to my x56 mobo/case. Have the HAF 932 has great amounts of room and the mobo north bridge heatsink gets in the way evga 3-way sli classified. All around great at stock keeps my cpu at 19 degrees Centigrade(i7 960). Only real problem would be lack of room in a person's case. It also blocked off my first RAM slot, but I have 6gb and can still put 4 more inside.

Its huge its not going to fit in all cases. Before buying this I highly advice you to check noctuas compatability page on their site. fans are kinda ugly but Noctua goes for performace over looks
|
This heat sink is massive and the fans are kind ugly, but this unit sure does what it is suposed to do, keep your cpu cool. Noctua goes for performace over looks. It has low noise levels, and adapters for even lower levels. I have a AMD Phenom II 965 125W 3.4GHZ and at idle it is 27C and load 38c. I haven't overclocked yet, but I am sure I will have great results, seeing all the good reviews. The unit smells of quality as soon as you take it out of the box.

-MUCH Better than expected Cooling
-Comes with Thermal Paste
-Easy to understand instructions
-Feels solid
-Cools chipset somewhat

-Needed to remove DIMM Heat spreaders on Corsair Dominator
-Large

This heatsink is the best on the market.
Implementing a push-pull design, not only does it do its job effectively, it cools most things around it as well
Comes with a detail instructions, to assist in the Installation which was EASIER than Intel's stock design, believe it or not
Probably the best heatsink out there. While I did need to remove my Corsair Dominator's heat spreaders on the first 2 DIMMs, the fan on the right side more than makes up for it, cooling them immensely.
Only concern would be space requirements on Mobo/Case. Noctua has a comprehensive Motherboard compatibility, if it isn't listed (As was my R3E motherboard), a quick email, and they respond quickly and politely. As for the case... Probably wouldn't recommend for a smaller Mid-Tower, if at all.

It was so good, my best friend came over and ripped it off my computer and stole it home. Now I am no longer friends with my previous "best friend".
But seriously, I was using this only with the 140MM fan because my motherboard fan controller was faulty. With this problem I still got under 26 degrees all the time with a i7 860 CPU!! Amazingly cool and quiet, very worth the buy. I would depend on this than any other coolers in the under $100 category (even water cooling).

for my new pc I've take the decision to retry air cooling. I have to put off my heatsink on my dominator gt.... but it seem to work very great. ha yes! it look really heavy and some people may be affraid to broke their MB. but noctua said they make test and the not got problem. so anjoy this beast!!

Noctua must have signed a pact with the devil?

The first thing you'll notice is the insane size and weight of this fan - I don't think this will fit into any case smaller than a full tower - it really is worth the size, this heatsink brought my temps down 15-20 degrees Celcius on load and idle, and looks sexy in my case. Noctua has me as a lifetime customer now, they really are committed to quality.

Large radiator for good heat dissipation Solid high quality fans Ease of installation Silent All required materials included

Fan size ratio

Performance is outstanding, considering that the amd phenom 2 955 stock fan was throttled to 3700 rpms on idle a noise nuisance. The heat sink works so well that the fans don't spin up, it is acting as a passive cooler. A tip for those installing the heat sink, give the rubber vibration-compensators strips a slight twist so they don't fall out when attaching the fans.

Excellent cooling performance, dual fans by default, excellent mounting system for i7 1156 and 1366. Very quiet and extremely well packaged and contstructed. Fans can be swapped out for even better performance, including a 38mm on the outside fan. Looks good. Could double as a weapon.
|
Height, depth and weight. If you are using RAM with big heat spreaders, you might need to remove the "outside" fan.
|
I would say I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
I installed this on my i7 860, and used the stock mounting system/backplate and the regular fan adapter and have been wholeheartedly impressed. It also comes with a low noise fan adapter which I'm not using. I have the i7 860 running at 4.0 ghz/200 BCLK/vcore 1.35/VTT 1.325, and with a Hyper 212+ with two 90 CFM fans on it, was hitting between 82 and 83 celsius at full load on the hottest core.
With this unit I have not exceeded 77 degrees celsius with both fans on, and 80 celsius with only the single middle fan on. Very impressed with these temps running Prime95 Max FFT. In regular use I have not exceeded 73 celsius on any cores playing games or doing CPU folding, which is great. I would say it rivals or exceeds the Prolimatech Megahalems in cooling ability.
I also noticed my VREG temperatures were a bit lower on my EVGA P55 FTW with this cooler, due to the fact that the middle 140mm fan seems to spray air outside the edges of the back "tower" of the cooler.
Right now I'm using it with G.SKill F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL kits and I had to unclip the outside fan to get the first DIMM in, but the fan can be slid up and further away from the motherboard to allow clearance for the increased height of the memory heat spreaders. Alternatively if you are using Corsair Dominators or OCZ Reapers/Blades, you'd likely have to remove the outside fan and either A) Go with a 92MM, or Run with only the middle fan.
Altogether this cooler is well-constructed, really nicely packaged, and even though it's a bit expensive compared to others, you have a solid cooling solution that you don't have to mod or buy extras for top-notch performance.

Excellent Cooling Great mounting setup QUIET
|
Cost
|
If you're buying this cooler you're not in the market for a budget setup so cost is not a true weakness. Installation on my Gigabyte X58A-udr3 was easy. The only frustration came when I was remounting the middle fan and the silicon dampening strips kept sliding out of place. Just a minor irritant, nothing real to gripe about. Cooling is excellent. I idle in the 28-32 range and under load (OCCT 8 threads 100% load) I haven't managed to push any core over 47 degrees (stock i7 D0 920). Even comes with a great thermal compound and simple instructions.

This heatsink is a must have for your computer. I changed my stock intel cooler for this new one and it was totaly worth it. It may be big but it dropped my cpu (intel quad core 2.4mhz) by 10 degrees. My processor is currently running at 25 degrees celcius. I was not really sure if it was worth 90$ when I first looked at it but I got it on sale at 75$ so it convinced me to buy it. Thank God! I would purchase it again.

I have dropped my idle temp from 38 to 32 and load doesn't go above 47. Huge difference from my Zalman 9700, which should go without saying. Load temp for this was anywhere from 59 to 78 depending on the speed of the fan.
Due to the great air flow of my case, the board temp is not an issue with the fan blowing in as Corsair has recommended in there instruction.

This is my third Noctua cooler, like the other the quality of build is impressive, What I like most, is the fact that you have only 2 screws to remove to gain access to the CPU

- Very Silent (under 20dBA) - Strong Performer (Arguably the best at time of writing) - Comes with Two High End Noctua Fans and a full Syringe of Noctua Thermal Compound (which bests Arctic Silver 5)

I have it cooler a rig that does nothing more than fold EL Wu's for FoldinglHome. The rig is powered by an Intel Core i7 920 running at 4.2GHz. The Ambient Temp, in the room, is around 21C. Idle temps are 31C and Full load is 61C.
Amazing cooler. The Intel stock cooler (with the Core i7 l 3.2GHz) could only muster load temps of 91C doing the same task and operating within the same environment.
Very Strong Performer.

Seated it one time, didnt bother trying to reseat it yet. Idling i5 at 18-19C. Stressed Test prime95 for 1 hour max 48C, stock no OC yet, so there still a room for OCing and probably reseating it after.

I'm simply amazed with this cooler.
I went from a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus with two Noctua NF-P14 140mm fans in push/pull orientation on my Phenom 720 (quad core unlocked, OC'd to 3.4ghz with 1.45 vcore) getting up to 62 degrees at full load, to this Noctua cooler on the same processor at 3.6ghz with a 1.5 vcore running 50 degrees on full load.
Now the 212 plus is no slouch of a cooler, especially with those two Noctua 140mm fans on it, but that's what amazed me even more was the fact that I could drop 12 degrees even with the increased vcore.
The build quality of this cooler is simply amazing. It comes with everything needed to install, the instructions are top notch, and it's damn near silent.
If anyone is looking for a top of the line cooler, this is the one for you, I can't say enough about how happy I am with this new heatsink!
