Quad Core, Cheap, Gets the job done
|
none
|
This is a very good CPU for someone on a low budget gaming build. You can get this CPU and pair it with a cheap GPU and get better performance than most APUs for the price. I have purchased this CPU twice and highly recommend it to anyone with a low budget.

Such a powerful cpu! Well ahead of it's time. As a gaming computer, it can do pretty much run any current title fantastically. ESPECIALLY if you have a great gpu(which I don't but its okay since the cpu is beast). as a music recorder/mixer, it runs super smooth. as an image editor, it is pretty flawless. I am very happy with this cpu and cheers to the year with this baby :)
|
All the low end computers don't have it :(
|
If you are on a budget and really a want a gaming pc or whatever, do NOT look away from these. this will be the best $90+ you will ever spend, and if you can get it cheaper you truly have won. it is a very, very reliable cpu. Phenom II is the sweet spot for quad cores in terms of price range and processing power

Good update for an old am2 platform. Super overclocker!
|
very hot, you absolutely need anaftermarket cooler, like all the others reviewa say.
|
Just brilliant, Revives my old amd2 platform for another 2 years. Imust be really lucky, but instantly overclocked to 4.0ghz, with just a modest increase in voltage. I an old aftermarket cooler, roswell which was running with the old pc. Mistake, underload, the temps would rise past 65. so I spent the extra dollars and bought a huge noctua heatsink with a 140mm fan. The beast is now running at 4.0ghz, rock solid 24 hours prime95.
system asus m3a78 amd phenom 955y 4.0ghz. ocz ddr2 800 platinum rev.2 y 975mhz sapphire 4890 vapourx core at 925mhz and ddr5 at 1100 mhz windows 7 64 bit

Fast for what i need it for. Using it for a HTPC setup.
|
Can run hot at times. must use aftermarket heat sink.
|
This is my first HTPC build. I found that with a tighter case the temps can get high (60 plus degrees). So the need for a aftermarket heat sink is a must. Other than that no issues, great performer does its job well.

Not much I can think of.

I bought this for my gf PC and I must say for an older chip it holds its own pretty well! Runs relatively cool and nice to have the unlocked multi. Games well with a cheap gtx 470 I picked up. Definitely can't complain, if your on a budget I would highly recommend this!

fast enough for just about anything good price unlocked easy overclocking
|
loud stock fan used lot power at full load price dropped $10 on me 2 days after I ordered ncix wouldn't refund $10
|
Good bang for your buck fast enough for almost anything.
This chip is Unlocked most will overclock to 3.8 1.4v to 4.2GHz 1.5v depending on cooling and the voltage your willing to pump in to the chip and your mother boards voltage regulators as this chip already needs 125w and overclocking will push the CPU to even higher wattage possibly over heating and overloading the mother boards voltage regulators so be careful.
Some chips just don't overclock well at all and some do and it all depends if your lucky sometimes.
my friends hit 4.2 no problem at 1.5v mine needs 1.525v at 4ghz and hits the wall will not go anyhigher
I run stock voltage at 3.6ghz with cool n quiet on not worth all the extra heat fan noise and hydro use for only 400mhz higher OC plus it's super fast anyway maybe in few years Ill go for little higher OC but for now its fast enough for me.
I was disapointed the price dropped by $10 2 days after I order ncix refused to refund the $10
I was disappointed in ncix but the price was still good
I was like ahhhhh man! should have waited 2 days oh well.
This chip was a bargain still best price I could fined I would buy it again If needed

not the fastest out there

On sale for $80. Paired with a 970A board and some DDR3 1600. OC'ed to 3.8 at 1.35v with a Hyper 212. A very capable system for under $200. It's no i7 but it's enough power for most people at a fraction of the cost.

$79.99, It's really good price to performance ratio. 8 MB cache.
|
125 watts, these can run a bit hot, stock fan is awful.
|
I've been using a AMD 945, and 965 in two of my machines for two years now. They are solid and can still handle what ever I throw at them. I bought this 955 to upgrade my media computer based on my experience with the 945 and 965.
This performs as well for what I throw at it. The stock fan that comes with these three CPU's I mentioned are the same and they are horrible. They are really loud. These also tend to run pretty warm compared to the Intel CPU's that I have. When I picked this up I also picked up a new cooler knowing how loud and bad the stock one is.
I'd buy another one of these if I need an inexpensive CPU. These are still perform well and are at a great price. Most CPU's this cheap do not have an 8 MB cache.

Good CPU, especially for price/performance ratio. Capable of handling lots of tasks at once (games, browser, music, and Matlab code)

Bought it off NCIX's outlet store on Ebay for $95. The stepping in mine was C2. For those looking for OC numbers, you're in luck.
Primed for 5 hours - no errors 4.2gz 1.475v multiplier 20x bus 210
solid..... and i think there is even more room left. I can't complaint, I upgraded from a Phenom II X3 series and the performance gain is still big.
Cheers

Super fast and stable stock Super Easy OC for first timers Great Price
|
None for it's price, anything better or worse isn't worth it
|
Bought in a PC Builder package as my first Build. Maxed OC at 4.2 Ghz using just the multiplier on a 110mm Zalman heatsink. System was rediculously snappy and comfortable at 4.0 but I'm just playing it safe at 3.6 on a day to day basis and I love it. System never hangs. Paid about $180 a year ago and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, especially at the current price/sale. My current system bottlenecks are my HDD and GPU so with the money you save on this thing an SSD would make it perfect

Mated with Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 MoBo, Powercolor Radeon HD6770 GPU, 8GB RAM, overclock autorun finally topped out at amazing 4.3GHz all the way up from 3.2GHz spec!!! Threw everything at it at once (running TV in Media Center, wifi network file transfer, Internet Explorer, Excel, tons of customized background processes, etc.) without so much as a flicker from this s-kickin' CPU. Same with games (DiRT3 for example runs awesomely). Stays cool (max I've seen so far ~40C), this is with Coolermaster Hyper TX3 heatsink swapped out for the one that comes with the CPU from AMD. Best value for $ I've seen.

It was part of combo set, paired up with the Sapphire Pure CrossFireX 890GX. plays very nicely with the Board, no problems with install. Put a Corsair Cooling Air Series A50 cooler on it no problems, runs very cool and more than fast enough for my needs. For $100 can't complain. I've built 3 rigs recently with a variaty of amd proseccors for family and friends and all have performed well so far. My own rig has a core I5 750 proseccor and this build with the "AMD 955 Quad" feels just as fast in use and it cost half the price!!! for a budget gaming rig you can't go wrong.

Excellent Proc! Paired with a Corsair A70, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3, 8GB (2x4GB) G.Skill Sniper 1600mhz RAM, XFX 6850 800mhz. Current CPU OC is 3.825ghz (x19, 1.45v), NB & HT OC to 2.2ghz (x11) & GPU OC to 875mhz/1250mhz. ROCK SOLID after several hours of Prime95 & Furmark with max temps hitting 53*C for CPU, 72*C for GPU, 32*C for NB, 63*C for VRM. My CM 690 II Advanced helps to keeps these components nice and cool. I did hit 4.0ghz but Prime95 kept failing on the 4th core after only a few seconds so bumped it back down to 3.825ghz and has been ROCK SOLID since.

Ok where to start. 6mb cache, true quad core design, easily overclockable to 4ghz on air if you have C3 stepping. Works like a champ, I haven't found anything yet that it cannot handle. Excellent for games because of the higher clock rate. Basically, for $110 you get an awesome quad that will hold you over until BullDozer is released
|
None
|
Okay, its a black edition so we all know what you're going to do with it when you got the thing broken in. And since these are the C3 stepping, let me tell you this; you got quite some play with this thing. It has been a fantastic overclocker from day 1. Why bother with the intel that goes for 200 more dollars than this? 4.2GHz on 1.4VCore is nice enough. I cannot stress anymore that you'll need to upgrade the stock cooler.

I got this for a budget build. It was cheap enough and was a significant upgrade from my old build. I wasn't really expecting much from it, but it's far exceeded my expectations. I can play all modern games with pretty high settings on it, so if you're into that, this works.
I mainly do video and image editing on the computer. I'm very happy with performance in regards to that. It really cut down on my encoding time by like 30%.
Great performance for very low cost. Personally, I don't think the slight performance upgrade with the Intel products is worth the significant price difference.

I have this coupled with the Gigabyte 870A-UD3 and cannot be happier with this build. The processor is able to be overclocked to 3.8GHz on STOCK VOLTAGE. Which, in my opinion - coming from a Q6600 - is incredible. Right now I have mine at 1.25v at 3.4GHz and am perfectly stable with temps never below 40C. Gflops of 42.5, which is better than my Q6600 overclocked getting 32. Can't wait for bulldozer!

- It is not supported in some old AM2 motherboards. (can only run at 800mhz)

This is a good CPU for people who wants to upgrade their old am2/am3 machine, but be aware that some of the old am2 motherboard won't support am3 CPU that's 125w such as this one. Also suitable for people to pair with a AM3+ motherboard and wait for the bulldozer.

This is the best CPU you can get for ~$100. Intel is slipping in the CPU market. The core i5 2500K is more powerful than this processor, and also costs much more. You get roughly 15% less power, for around 44% less cost. I think that's a fair compromise.

Surprising performance! Bad Company 2 without a sweat! Cheap, 4 cores, lots of cache.
|
125W, included heatsink could be better, but read on!
|
Unlike previous comments, I don't find the included CPU's heatsink to be that much loud. It certainly isn't silent, but if you've got a fairly loud build, it will blend with the rest; and it does a surprisingly good job cooling this 125W CPU. If this is your first AMD build, don't be shy to pull the lever to put the heatsink in place even though you feel like it's about to break.
I wasn't expecting that much horse power out of this processor! Paired with a HD6850, I achieved a $600 gaming build that supports Bad Company 2 at the highest settings while providing about 60 FPS! Quite amazing! AMD still beat Intel in the ~$100 price range as Intel's processors in this range are mainly dual core CPUs; most games such as BBC2 will benefit of additional cores.
Paired with a board such as the Gigabyte GA-870A-USB3, you've got an AM3+ ready build that may play today's game at the highest settings.

Fast Processor, Good for gaming

LOUD fan
|
I bought this processor for an upgrade to my gaming build and so far i have had no issues. The stock fan included with this can get up to 6500-7000rpm's when gaming and is very annoying so i would recommend getting a aftermarket heat sink.

Slapped this in a Gigabyte board at stock settings and am enjoying a nice gaming rig for my buddy. I slapped an aftermarket Arctic Cooling Cooler on this to run quieter. This is just stock settings and everything is flying along quite nicely for a mid-gaming rig.

I bought this for my gaming rig that I was building a month back. So far it hasn't given me trouble in anyway. It handles any new game with some computing power left over. Very easy to overclock. I got it to 3.6 GHz on stock heatsink. Price matched at the time for $109.99. Great for budget builds, but will still handling most anything you throw at it.

Fast, quad core, fantastic overclocker, CHEAP!
|
Loud CPU fan
|
I've been using this processor for a couple of months now and I could hardly be happier. Using the stock CPU fan I've had it overclocked to 3.5GHz with very modest temperatures. I know I could go higher but I'm waiting to buy a better cooler before I do. It is very fast and I have not yet seen any game that can slow it down much. It is also crazy fast when encoding video, I've found. My only complaint is that under loud the fan is LOUD, easily the loudest component in my case.

Great price/performance ratio. Produces less heat than a 550BE unlocked to B50 quad core.
|
None, except my new i5 2500K makes it seem pokey, like my 4850e HTPC.
|
I have one of these in my wife's PC and one in my workshop PC (formerly my office PC but replaced with an i5). This is a great processor and still a heck of a value IMO. I tried out Sandy Bridge which kills this in subjective testing of desktop 'snappiness' and HD Video encoding speed. Then again the other Intel platform costs nearly double. In all honesty this is more than most people will need! Highly recommended.

Great bang for the buck Overclocks well straight out of the box
|
Stock cooler is loud.
|
Excellant bang for the buck on this, overlocks surprisingly well even just on the stock cooler. But that stock cooler is *loud*. I ran it for a bit before putting on an H50, and it was easily louder than any of my case fans when it span up to full speed. It was effective granted. But loud. You'll want something else on there.

Crazy bang for buck Can undervolt at stock speeds with no stability loss Can oc a couple hundred mhz with no voltage increase Runs like a champ
|
Weak performance compared to competing cpu's, but, that's why it's priced no much better
|
Bought this over 2 years ago, a couple of days after it's initial release, paid 285 for this baby. Oc'd it on day of purchase to 3.4 with no voltage increase, then late last year to 3.6 with .05 v increase, now running 100% stable at 3.7 h 1.425 volts with multiplier at 18 and fsb at 206 mhz (ram h 1648mhz, 1.8v due to that). Temps stay below 50 C with Xigmatek's good old S1283 + a discontinued 140mm scythe fan blowing at med/high. Also have ample positive pressure airflow, as long as room temps are decent of course.
I can reach 3.8 but things become unstable for cpu intense apps since I don't want to oc my entire system as my NB heatsink skins my Forte sound card so i'm not interested in tempting fate with that one :)
All in all great cpu, never kept one for this long, if you have a great aftermarket heatsink that competes with mine, buy this cpu, oc it to 3.6+ and enjoy the money saved. That or wait for bulldozer :)

Very nice looking case with HD fans very quit and you can adjust as you wish. After 10 hours running the test PC is very cool and nice. You will be able unlock up to 7000MHZ if you use the board 880 but I wouldn’t recommend that I would just leave it as it is it will work just fine for a long time. Over clocking can damage the system. I would definitely order more or recommend to my client to get one. This CPU is the best Good work AMD

An impressive CPU! Even with the most taxing gaming it has performed beautifully and stayed cool with the supplied fan & heatsink. Overclocking is easy, however I like to run my units at normal clocking. I am sure glad I went with the 125W Black over the 90W others. Windows 7 runs cleanly with my two monitors and 3D gaming set-up. Always been a big fan of AMD and this is another positive for them.

After a year and a bit with my X2 7850, I decided to move on up to the Quad. It's pretty sweet. The largest gains I've noticed is in the area of video editing / conversion of formats. This along with my new motherboard have made me very happy. I have yet to OC this baby. I havent yet cause I dont game and the difference in the extra Ghz's will not be too useful to me at the moment vs the increase in power consumption. If I OC I will post results.

-price to performance ratio is great -good enough for gaming -a piece of cake to oc to 3.8 ghz -much better than its competitors in this price range
|
-can't compare with intel's i5 quad and above lineup -might as well have had it oc to 3.8 ghz out of the box (barely had to change to voltage to get it stable)
|
A great budget CPU for gaming, but won't be able to compete with the top more expensive intel CPU's. Still there is no point in going over the i5 760 barrier for gaming (as benchmarks shown the performance is minimal once you go past the i5 760).

AMD performance not up to Intel's level
|
Price performance point is decent for this high end amd cpu when price matched. Needed a good gaming CPU for a budget build, and this fit the bill. It was definitely worth the extra cost to get the additional cores since a similarly clocked dual or tri core CPU wasn't much less. If I needed midrange or on a slightly restricted budget, I would pick this up again.

I am a new comer to overclocking and when looking to build myself a PC, nothing beat this in term of pricing for what I am going to get. I overclocked this to 3.6Ghz on stock cooling it was stable for the entire duration of 10 hrs or so of running memtest86. The highest temperature it hit was 45C. With even more potential if I get a better cpu cooling unit, I would probably be using this for a couple of years to come.
I use my PC for mostly 3D renderings (Solid Works, AutoCad 3D)

Processeur puissant. 4 coeurs. Multiplicateur débloqué facilitant l'overclocking.
|

I'm very happy with this purchase, was able to get it with an instant savings and a nice combo deal applied to my ram. Good Value Quad Core Supports DDR3 and DDR2
|
Not an intel i7, haha
|
Bought this for a build that was on a budget. At the time of purchasing this, it was on sale for $25 off isntantly, and came with a free coupon for Modern Warfare 2. This worked out to be about $170 after discounts and MW2.
I was originally looking at the Phenom II 925 cpu which was $155 dollars (and did not have MW2 included). However with the $25 dollar discount and FREE copy of MW2, this actually in a sense worked out cheaper, as the owner that the build was for would have paid $60 Canadian from a local retailer for the game anyways.
As an intel i7 fan, I have to say the price of these Phenom II and performance you get from these, makes for great budget friendly gaming builds.

The cpu has plenty of power for what most users will be doing. Intel still keeps top place, but for this price its a good buy.
One thing to watch out for is the stock heatsink, its LOUD when the system is loaded.

I bought this CPU for a HTPC; a slight overkill, but it's pretty much future proof for at least a couple years. Because it's a black edition, it is easiy over clockable (though I haven't tried it yet). Also, compared to other quad-code processors, this chip's price is quite a bargain.

Bought this chip to replace my aged AMD X2 6000+. i can say that i noticed a huge difference, everything performs, and runs faster. i am very impressed with how cool this chip runs (i am using MX3 paste and a Zalman 9700 cooler) it runs l 26 degrees idle and 29 degrees load with stock clock speeds (granted i am using it in my basement which is cool to begin with). i was able to hit 3.9ghz just by changing the multiplier from 16 to 19.5 (stable) runs 30degrees idle and 38 degrees load. i can hit 4.0 on stock voltage as well however is not stable under stress test but can still play games without crashing. i am confident i can hit 4.2 with some minor adjustments to voltages and northbrige clocks. GREAT CHIP! highly recommended and at 169.99 on sale might as well get it instead of the 965.

Speed for a good price, quiet, overclocking potential!

Installation instructions are generic, read the right one!

I'm very impressed with the value of this processor. It brings quad core cpus into an affordable price range. I'm running some pretty CPU intensive programs, and It's holding up fine.
I have no complaints of any merit.

Pretty good value for a 4 core. However I was a little disappointing in the performance compared to the overclocked Core 2 Duo e4400 I upgraded from. I expected that it would blow the Intel out of the water. However it was not that much of an increase for real world applications. Fr instace video editing wasn't realy much faster. It does game very well though. The new cooler seems to be somewhat better quality than the older ones AMD was selling with their CPUs.Copper heat pipes even! I PMnd this puppy and got an even better deal. I think it is a pretty good purchase while we wait for the next generation to come out and prices to get better.

This is a solid processor that I am keeping cool with an OCZ Vendetta 2 HSF. Idle temps are around 30-31C at stock speeds and 34C at 3.8Ghz. Very easy to overclock this processor. I just installed this last night, installed windows 7 and started loading my apps back on. In the meantime I loaded up TurboV and AMD Overdrive. I just played really quickly with the cpu multiplier and bumped it up to 19 with a voltage jump up to 1.45V and temps look good.
I didn't get a chance to test it under load because I was busy last night but I expect 3.8Ghz will be rock solid, I've heard some people with my cpu and HSF setup have hit 4Ghz without issue so I will definitely take my time and see what I can get it too.

I have to say i am pretty impressed with the 955, at stock speeds it seems to be a very good performer per dollar spent in games (which is important to me). Works with a wide variety of amd motherboards and memory combinations thanks to am2, + and am3 , ddr2 and ddr3 Compatibility.
